Jillian’s mom was perched on a stool next to the counter, sipping coffee as she learned what had taken place the previous night.

“Danny asked you to let him spend more time with his daughter—I’m assuming on the West Coast. Is that something he can do?”

“I have no idea, but he was quick to say he set up a trust fund. Like money is what matters to a little girl.”

“Someday that little girl will need a college education, and money would certainly help with that.”

“Mom, I know college is expensive and I’m trying to save money to build our house on the land you and Dad gave me so things are tight, but I’ll still be able to give her an education. And I have a few years too.” She held up a hand as her mom opened her mouth. “No, I don’t need your money. We’re fine. The land is more than generous.”

“We want you and our granddaughter to have a home with plenty of land around you. Besides, who else is there to help if we can’t help our only child?”

She placed her hand over Mom’s. “I appreciate it, but to get back to the Danny situation, he’s asked for us to meet him for ice cream at Dorrit’s. I’m hoping this means he’s had a change of heart. But if he starts to say anything that will hurt her in any way, we’re out of there.”

“Good.” She tossed the paper cup in the trash barrel. “Looks like you’ve got orders stacked pretty high. Need a hand?”

“I’d love it. I’ve decided I’m going to advertise for part-time help, a person to handle the front while I create arrangements and work on the website. I want to grow the business, so it’s the next step to financial freedom.”

“I’m always happy to lend a hand. All you have to do is ask.” Mom took the small clipboard with the stack of orders and began to line up vases according to the schedule.

“I appreciate the offer, but I like to keep you on reserve for when I really need help.” She grinned. “Like today. In fact, I was going to see if Dad could do some extra deliveries for me this afternoon.”

“He’s just waiting for your call. He loves doing holiday deliveries.” She pointed to the phone. “Call him and then call the paper and get the ad in for the weekend. Strike before the flowers wilt.”

“The saying is strike while the iron’s hot.” Jillian shook her head.

“You’re in the flower business, not the laundry business, so I changed it up.” She gave a funny little smile and a one-shouldered shrug. “It’s called being creative.”

“You know, since I’m going to put an ad in the paper, maybe I’ll make up a sign for the window too. Who knows; maybe someone will see it and apply in person. I’d rather get the first impression up close instead of over the phone or via email.”

“I’ll get started and you take care of business.” Mom put on a dark-green logo apron and grabbed floral shears.
